This one is for my sisters of the Resistance!
Because marching is a long, long way from being over!
Like many of you, I knit a bazillion pink pussyhats for the Women’s March on Washington! This activity, started by the PussyHat project founders Krista Suh and Jayna Zweiman lives on!
This is what I know to be true. Most of the hats knit, crocheted and sewn for the January marches were …… warm. Which if you marched in a cold climate was perfection! Even normally January frigid DC was very moderate! I wore mine and about cooked myself into a frazzle. A dang FRAZZLE! Because the resistance lives, because we still march, show up, and are seen and heard, I think that we need a warm weather tweak. My warm weather tweak is that in the summer months you could be looking at temps in the 90’s, too too tooooooo hot to wear a thick hat, no matter how darling!
I came up with a super simple, super cute, super sassy version to show your pride and get your resist on when it’s hot.
My version was created with hot fuschia tulle, the thicker, stiffer kind — not the soft mushy bridal kind. Having said that using the smaller gauge ‘holes’ in the softer tulle will give you a softer drapier top. One yard makes 3 adult pussyhats.
Gather your simple, inexpensive materials
1 yard pink tulle
Thread to match
optional: 1 yard pink yarn, ribbon or thread
Cut the tulle in a double layer, using a rotary cutter is easiest as it keeps everything from shifting although you can certainly use scissors if you like.
Cut that double layer 9″ x 13″ inches
Pin around the two shorter sides and along one long edge. Stitch using matching thread with a narrow zigzag if possible at 1/2″ seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance.
Turn the pussyhat inside out, you will have a rectangle.
Try it on. You will see that you can roll a brim to add sass as well as help customize fit. The ‘ears’ appear as you try it on. **If you would like your pussyhat to have more predominant ears, you can use matching (or wildly contrasting yarn or ribbon to wrap around the ear 3″ inches from the top corner.
Make & Share!!!!!
Tweak your ears or don’t, it’s up to you!
The important thing? Make a bazillion and share them with love, to everyone you can!
They’re easy peasy to make and very inexpensive. Sew an uber cool, breezy one for yourself and for your sisters.
Rise up, be counted and be strong!
Don’t forget March 8th, 2017, In Honor of International Womens Day (that means alla’ y’all!!!!),
A Day Without a Woman!
Show me your pussyhats! I can’t wait to see them!
